Prose ex4 pg 280
1)For me the tangerine symbolizes love,happiness,bliss,sharing and caring as the man bought the tangerines that the girl which he saw cut her finger due to the reef plant.He then paid her and also offered half of it to her,because he knows that they are poor and could not afford to eat it so he decided to share it with her to spread the joy because he knew besides that he could not do anything further.
2)At the beginning the writer is known as someone who is very mean as he did not help the girl who just cut her hands,then the writer wrote about the man father who teaches him that the grandmother needed more than they does,he does not empathize with people plight and close his eyes ,ears and heart to other people's sufferings,telling himself that if he could not help then he does not have to feel so bad.At the end he showed a totally different side of him which is sharing and also helping.
3)There are a few internal conflict in the story,for example when the girl cut her hands he was in a dilema at one point to buy the coral or help her as they could not buy it to protect the sea.Another internal conflict is when he realises that he pitied the children plight at vietnam then he started to open his heart he realises that its pity that made a human and in the end it was resolve because he pitied the girl and shared the fruits with her as he understood her plight and sympathizes with her.
