Prose Exercise 1 pg 274
1)My impression as i read the passage is that this guy is a mysterious and secretive guy,this is because at the starting of the story he said "i've got to hide",it shows that he is hiding from someone and he seems creepy.
Secondly,it shows that he is a very clever man,the passage shows that he got to hide from getting caught by the police,he went inside an open manhole ,"he hatched a tentative plan",he has already decided on a plan to enter the manhole after the sirens went .
Thirdly,he is a determined person.Evidence is that "He hung for an eternal moment"he tried his best to grip on to the rims so that he doesn't fall or hurt himself in the drain.
2)He uses words like "dark corner of the vestibule",and also "he stiffened as the siren rose" is the words that he uses to instilled fear in the mood of the text.It shows that the man in the story is facing a dark,place where it is surrounded by the police cars.
3)The mood in the text is very creepy and scary as there is a lot of suspense in the storyline.The starting of the story,the criminal was already searching for a place to hide so it has created the suspense and has brought in the tension in the story,as the story progressed the writer told about how he entered the dark and dirty drain to hide from the police.
4)He uses places in his story to make it more scary,as in the shops,the drain which has a huge water rushing and make it more scary.
